Response to Slats re: Time to Root for Harriet
I think that it is time to root for our country and the Supreme Court. It is folly to compare the immature razing of a college classmate with the critical analysis of a 61 year old lawyer who will make decisions that will affect the lives of all Americans.
Miers submitted a questionnaire to the Senate Judiciary Committee that was so unacceptable, the two leaders of the committee, a Republican and a Democrat, demanded that she do it over again -- a do-over of a take home exam!!!
Slats usually relies on the opinions of the following stanch conservatives to support his positions.
George Will says "Miers would never make the Top 100 list from each of the Top 100 experts on constitutional law."
Charles Krauthammer used some fancy footwork to imply that she was a "joke". Krauthammer even says that Miers will shine in the confirmation hearings because expectations have been set so low. In other words, "even Miers" will do well in the hearings.
Bill Kristol says her nomination is a mistake. She doesn't have the "intellectual distinction." He implies that her nomination is an "error" because Karl Rove has been distracted by the Plame kerfuffle.
Mark Levin says the "President flinched."
David Frum says "... she is not good enough for the job."
Then finally, of course, there is Ann Coulter: "Unfortunately for Bush, he could nominate his Scottish terrier Barney, and some conservatives would rush to defend him, claiming to be in possession of secret information convincing them that the pooch is a true conservative and listing Barney's many virtues as loyalty, courage, never jumps on the furniture... "
Slats went on to say this;
"Perhaps all these pundits are right, but do they hear themselves talking and do they read what they write?"
My question to Slats is this. Does HE hear what he is saying? As suspicious as I am about the motives of the Right, this may be one time when the choice of Miers is so outrageous that even fierce party loyaly cannot overcome the fundamental desire to ensure that the future of our country is not placed in life-long incompetent hands, no matter how NICE we may all think Ms. Miers is and no matter how concerned we may be about what SHE is thinking or her feelings.
You go girl and resign your nomination!

My good friend, in your zeal to denounce and attack us conservatives at every turn, you have missed the entire point of my post. As I have privately stated before, I too am not happy with the choice of Miers. But given the tenor and visciousness of the attack, I can't but help not feel for this woman. I thought Democrats, the party of "I feel your pain.", would understand this. But maybe not.
